Candidates for the MA Sociology (Thesis) must have a GPA of 2.7 or higher in their first degree in sociology or a related field such as social work, journalism and mass communication, economics, political science, population and development studies, public administration, international relations, public health, community development, psychology, medicine, gender studies, history and cultural heritage, education, or another relevant field of study.
The fee for all university programmes including MA Sociology (Thesis) is published in the relevant section in the prospectus after being approved by the OUT Council.
It is expected that an MA Sociology (thesis) candidate will have expertise in identifying emergent structural factors that influence the world, comprehending rapid social changes and how these changes are understood by competing sociological approaches, appreciating recent societal developments relating to social class, ethnicity, gender, capitalism, nationalism, and globalisation, explaining how social problems emerge and the ways in which power is exercised.
Similarly, the program will boost candidates’ confidence in developing original research projects, which include the selection and analysis of an appropriate case, a review of relevant literature, and the presentation of logical conclusions, all of which are required by multi-sectorial social organizations.
MA Sociology (Thesis) graduates are expected to apply their knowledge of societal development in the public and private sectors, where employers frequently seek analytical and critical thinking skills, cross-cultural understanding, the ability to collate and present complex information, knowledge of current laws and regulations in the sector, and strong interpersonal skills.
The successful candidates will be able to pursue PhD studies in sociology or other related fields.
