Programmes Informations
The programme is open to candidates with variety of background and interests in either general or specific function area. However, prospective candidates must be graduates from environmental studies, science, engineering, social science or any medical from recognized institution with minimum of B grade. Also, admission may be based on equivalent qualifications as stipulated in the University admission regulations. Each study programme starts at the beginning of the academic year and ended 18 month later.
(Management/Health/Science) degrees. There will be an exit award of a Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Studies after completion of all the prescribed core courses and if don’t want/ fail to finish the Dissertation part.

Upon successful completion of the programme it is expected that a candidate shall have acquired the following competences;
- Develop a deeper knowledge in environmental studies/MES that is Pragmatic based.
- Enhance the awareness of the growing importance of environmental studies/MES to innovate and find solutions to the problems or opportunities in society, nation& worldwide.
- Develop capacity to apply critical and analytical skills in understanding and applying in the context from small to complex problems of environmental studies/MES sectors.
- Gain a comprehensive understanding and be able to communicate, prepare sound reports and carry out environmental studies/MES related research worldwide.
- Develop awareness, skills, values, attitudes and knowledge to create environmental studies/MES education to support all sectors or an ecosystem of solutions to the Mother Earth Environment for Sustainable Development.
Students are assessed by a combination of course work, final examination and at the end a dissertation. The course work component comprise of timed test worth 30%, while the final examination worth 70%. The formal examinations and timed test allow sufficient assessment and feedback to maintain intellectual rigor and provide opportunity for individual improvement. Dissertation is assessed independently with the research methodology and carries 100%. The minimum pass mark for any course shall be the grade “B” or 50%. Candidates, who successfully complete the required units and dissertation, shall qualify upon approval by Senate of the Open University of Tanzania, for the award of Masters in Environmental Studies (MES).
