Master of Arts in Gender Studies (MA GS)
The purpose of the Master of Arts in Gender Studies programme is to produce scholars who are conversant to address the complex issues related to gender disparities in Tanzania, specifically, and in Africa at large.
The OUT Gender Studies programme thus intends to provide professionals who can engage with the familiar yet challenging subject of how gender structures influence our world.
It is hoped that a scholarly understanding of gender disparities and gender inequalities among officials in the private and governmental sectors as well as in academia would help eradicate gender imbalances through employing well researched and articulated gender mainstreaming initiatives.
The programme will offer students the opportunity to work with scholars and peers who share a focus on gender as a category of analysis.
The main purpose of the Master of Arts in Gender programme is to produce scholars with quality gradate qualifications to address issues of gender disparity, gender discrimination, and gender violence.
In addition, MA in Gender Studies progamme will have the academic ability and the competence to apply the acquired theories, research skills and knowledge to critically evaluate and determine the quality and the validity of any women/gender mainstreaming materials, research, and or project.
The graduands will also have acquired the qualifications for admission into a PHD programme in Women and/or Gender Studies.
Finally, the Gender Studies programme will prepare students for virtually every career, such as journalism, education, International development, community service, social work ,activism, and health, in which consciousness and analysis of gender are useful an often essential.

Candidate will be required to have a first degree in any social sciences and other related fields with second class score or above.
Admission also can be considered for one who graduates in Sociology, Journalism and Mass Communication, Economics, Political Science, Population and Development studies, Public administration, International Relations, Public Health, Community Development, Psychology, Medicine, Gender Studies, History and Cultural Heritage, Education and other relevant fields of study.
Courses offered for MAGS include 5 core courses, dissertation, including two elective courses to choose from 4 available electives option as shown below. Core courses will begin followed by the elective courses identified on the table below.

Student will have the ability to:
- Have in-depth knowledge understanding of a specific women and gender issues (e.g. feminist ethics, gender and education, gender and ethnicity, gender in history, gender in literature, gender and sexualities, gender and work, gender and welfare etc.)
- Acquire critical understanding and analytical skills in conceptualizing the issues of women and gender and place it in a societal and cultural as well as in interdisciplinary perspectives
- Carry out solid knowledge of gender theories, methodologies and methods of data collection and analysis in gender studies (e.g. empiricist, standpoint and poststructuralist theories, interdisciplinary methodological approaches, text analysis, observation, interviews etc)
- Can conduct independent research on issues in women and gender perspective under minimal guidance.
- Can prepare strategic plans and contribute to creative interventions that may result in a world with less inequality specifically in women and gender issues.
All courses shall be examined during the semester session in which they are studied.
i) Assessment is by examination and coursework.
ii) Each module carries 100% marks. The final examination counts for 50% of the total marks. Course work carries 50% of the total marks.
iii) The evaluation of the programmes will be through course work, examination and written assignments.
Except for the research project, courses will be evaluated as follows:

iv) A candidate shall not pass the course unless /she attains a minimum of 50% (B) in each module.
v) Before the candidate is allowed to start writing a dissertation, he /she must successfully complete the course work part with a mean overall grade of “B” or above in all chosen /pursued core modules listed. A candidate who has not completed at least half of the course work shall not be allowed to proceed to research work. However students will be encouraged to start developing research proposal from the time they start course work.
vi) The mode of evaluation for the thesis comprises 100% and shall be evaluated internally and by external examiners.
