Masters in Humanitarian Action, Cooperation and Development (MHACD)
The Master in Humanitarian Action, Cooperation and Development (MHACD) programme offers a wide
approach to issues concerning humanitarian actions well as to methodological research procedures. The
programme benefits from the experience of a highly qualified team of lecturers who are specialized in various
areas of Humanitarian and Development Aid, such as Management of NGOs, Design and Implementation of
Projects on Humanitarian Action, international and Development Economics, Political Science, International
Security, and International Humanitarian Law.

Minimum Qualifications for studying MHACD Master’s Degree
For admission to the Master’s Degree of The Open University of Tanzania a candidate shall either hold a degree of The Open University of Tanzania or a qualification from an approved institution of higher learning, deemed to be equivalent to a degree of The Open University of Tanzania of not less than GPA 2.7
Candidates who hold unclassified degrees should have a credit or, a distinction in the subject of the intended Master’s Degree. Candidates with a Pass Degree will also be considered for admission if:
Their undergraduate performance in the proposed subject of study was a B grade average or above; and
They have satisfied the relevant Faculty/Institute that they have exhibited academic potential through extensive field work, subsequent research experience and/or additional training.
Candidates for Master’s Degree by thesis should in addition to the above have extensive or rich experience in research in the area of study.

MHAICD responds to the need for qualified workers in disaster relief and development, in government and non-government agencies involved in humanitarian operations and development practice. To qualify for graduation candidates, have to complete 18 units. These units focus on giving candidates undertaking this programme the following skills:
- Knowledge and understanding of the patterns of humanitarian action and mechanisms of international cooperation and development
- Knowledge and understanding and demonstrated the ability to assess complex humanitarian crisis in a systematic way and to formulate adequate and ethically sound recommendation for humanitarian action in accordance with the humanitarian principles.
- Ability to apply relevant tools and theories in humanitarian action, cooperation and development and development strategies,
- Competence in quality decision making with the goal of enhancing the living standards to people who have been affected by various natural and man-made crises,
- Skills in undertaking independent international studies, writing quality reports, and in communicating effectively,
- Management skills in articulating and cascading international community’s vision, mission, objectives and targets, and in winning the mankind’s commitment and dedication towards the attainment of global development
- Students are assessed through a term paper carrying 30% of total marks, one group presentation paper carrying 20% and annual examination that carries 50% of the total marks. Assessment explores candidate’s ability to analyze issues and make arguments on the subject matter,
- A candidate shall not have passed unless he/she attains a minimum of 50% (B) in his/her course.
- Before the candidate is allowed to proceed with the thesis research phase of the Masters programme, the candidate must successfully complete the coursework part with a mean overall grade of “B” or above (i.e. GPA of at least 3.0) in all chosen /pursued core courses listed.
(c) Dissertation-The dissertation is an independent study done by the student under supervision. Each candidate shall be allocated a supervisor with whom he/she shall have regular contacts during the period of research. A candidate shall undertake an applied research in any area related to MAGL under the themes to be proposed by the Department, and submit a dissertation of approximately 15,000- 20,000 words as partial fulfillment of the award of MAGL. In evaluating the dissertation, the approved regulations of the Open University of Tanzania regarding dissertation shall apply. The mode of evaluation for the dissertation comprises 100% and shall be evaluated independently.
